Environmental protection has become a consuming interest in North America in recent years and a number of important publications have focussed interest on it. Currently all projects having an impact on land-use are subjected to predevelopment environmental enquiry. Even the almost inexhaustible forest resources of Canada have felt the burden of agriculture urbanization and intensive forest exploitation of 'c1ean-cutting' system which has left a heavy back-log of unregenerated areas. So, the need of environmental planning has arisen in Canada also. The broad trends and current approaches in environmental planning in forest resources management in Canada are identified under the headings; ecological regionalism, soil, forest inventory, biophysical land classification, Canada land inventory, reforestation and reclamation and land-use planning.

Studies conducted for Sarda Sagar reservoir in Uttarakhand state and found 42 fish species belonging to 33 genera, 15 families and 6 orders with disappearance of some earlier reported important species. The available data of fish landing for the period 1997 to 2007 showed dominance (58.86 %) of small sized weed/trace fishes followed by minor carps (16.9%), while the commercially important species like Indian major carps, Common carps and mahseer contributed least share (6.99%), among them only Common carp formed sizeable catch (53%). In general, Gudusia chapra and Labeo gonius of the minor carps group are the dominant species in the catch. The estimated production was recorded 60 Kg/ha. A declining trend was observed in the production during 1997-2007 due to over exploitation and habitat destruction. Rational stocking and harvesting especially ranching with fingerlings of Indian major carps are desirable for stock enhancement.Keywords

Abiotic factors in the riverine ecosystem are important in structuring fish communities along the longitudinal gradients. Quantitative data on species abundance were collected during October 2015–September 2016 in the mountain stretch of the River Western Ramganga from Kumaun Lesser Himalayas, India. Multivariate analyses were done to study the relationship between fish assemblages and abiotic parameters. Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling indicated two distinct groups in the upstream and downstream zones. The composition of fish assemblages in different zones was found to be strongly associated with habitat characteristics. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed species abundance association with temperature, conductivity, stream width and altitude. Further analysis showed conductivity–altitude combination as the primary factor determining the longitudinal distribution of species composition in the studied stretch of this river. The present study aids in understanding the factors that determine the spatial segregation of species for the restoration, conservation and management of aquatic resources.Keywords

Removal of rain from still images is a complex and a challenging task. The rain drops affects only on a very small region of an image, and hence, leading to a confusion to determine which region should be considered and which should not. In this paper, a new technique has been implemented which effectively uses the gradient minimization approach to remove the rain pixels. The minimization technique can globally control how many non-zero gradients are resulted in the image. The method is independent of local features, but instead locates important edges globally. These salient edges are preserved and low amplitude and insignificant details are diminished. The rain pixels are removed in this manner. Finally the rain removed images are enhanced in intensity using histogram adjustment technique to get better contrast images. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is highly efficient as it removes rain effectively even under heavy rain conditions, while preserving the details of the image.

Hyperspectral data can find wide applications in classification and mapping of pure and mixed pixels in images of different land-cover types. Hyperspectral data of high spectral resolution enhance discrimination of target objects; but the low spatial resolution poses a challenge due to creation of mixed pixels. The cost of acquiring images at high resolution from sensors is high and rarely available. With images of coarser spatial resolution, it is difficult to identify the endmembers and their locations within the mixed pixel. This study utilizes the fractional abundance values of target endmembers obtained from linear spectral unmixing in locating the sub-pixels of a mixed pixel. The study illustrates the preparation of classified maps of finer spatial resolution by locating the sub-pixels through different mapping algorithms. A comparative analysis of these mapping algorithms, viz. attraction model-based sub-pixel mapping, simulated annealing, neighbourhood connectivity, cosine similarity-based mapping and Markov random fieldbased mapping has been made and an output generated. The algorithms have been implemented on standard hyperspectral datasets of Indian Pines having 200 spectral channels, Pavia University of 103 spectral channels and Jasper Ridge of 198 spectral channels. It has been observed that simulated annealing-based mapping produces higher accuracy rate than the other algorithms, whereas in terms of execution time, attraction model takes lesser time. The accuracy has been validated with the ground reference map of available standard hyperspectral datasets on which each algorithm has been tested and analysed.Keywords
